Western Youth Institution, the 16-story former prison in Morganton, North Carolina, that housed younger offenders for much of its history, was imploded July 11. The prison, which opened in 1972, earned the moniker "High-Rise Prison" due to its unique design. The facility was brought down via implosion by Greensboro, North Carolina-based D.H. Griffin.
In its place, a new National Guard Regional Readiness Center is scheduled to be built that will cover 77,000 square feet on 38 acres.
