Video: University Hall imploded on University of Virginia campus

University Hall, an arena on University of Virginia’s campus that had served as host to countless sporting events between its opening in 1965 and closure in 2015, was imploded May 25, UVA Today reports.  

Indianapolis-based Renascent Inc. served as the demolition contractor overseeing the job, and Phoenix, Maryland-based Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI) handled the implosion.

Preliminary demolition work on the structure started in January as crews performed asbestos abatement. Ancillary buildings surrounding University Hall were subsequently torn down to make way for the demolition. The implosion itself lasted only a matter of seconds in which the roof comprised of 5,000 tons of concrete came careening to the ground.

Between 90 to 95 percent of the building is being recycled. Metal will be sold off and the remaining concrete will be used as fill, including at the site.
