A large manufacturing site in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, that has produced Nabisco cookies and crackers for decades is set to face partial demolition next year.
Local media reports indicate the factory opened in 1958 and expanded several times. However, its current owner, Brazil-based Mondelez International, ceased baking operations at the plant last year.
Now, Patch.com indicates Fair Lawn Mayor Kurt Peluso said in a Facebook Live Q&A that the demolition and rebuilding of the Fair Lawn Nabisco facility was on track to begin in 2023.
Although baking operations have ceased at the plant, according to Patch.com some Nabisco office and warehouse functions will remain there until just before the demolition process starts.
The building’s new owner, New Brunswick, New Jersey-based Greek Development, is reportedly leasing the space to Mondelez until closer to the demo date. Greek reportedly bought the property for $146.5 million last year.
The new owner’s plan, according to Patch and Peluso, is to tear down parts of the factory complex but also add newly configured space. Peluso says a company already is “under contract to potentially use” the retrofitted building for warehouse and distribution functions.
