The demolition industry has lost one of its leaders. ERM Technical Director Mike Casbon passed away on March 17 at the age of 53.
Casbon, who was based out of ERM's Indianapolis office, had 25 years of experience in the fields of demolition, decontamination and construction.
Over the course of his career, Casbon had been a member of the National Demolition Association’s (NDA’s) Education Committee, Safety Committee and Government Affairs Committee. He also was involved with the association’s Foundation of Demolition Management education series and was recently nominated for the NDA’s Hall of Fame Award.
He was also a subject matter expert for the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) and had trained more than 1,000 compliance officers on field inspection principles. In addition, he was a frequent subject matter expert in Construction & Demolition Recycling for articles related to training and safety.
“Mike's deep knowledge of safety, construction and environmental remediation was sought after the world over. His passing is a huge loss to NDA and the industry. He was a friend and trusted resource to the board, committees and staff,” NDA Executive Director Jeff Lambert said in a release.
Casbon was remembered at the NDA's Demolition Rockies show that took place March 22-25 in Aurora, Colorado, when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. As part of the association's tribute, a new safety award was named in Casbon's honor that will be distributed to those who show a commitment to safe workplace practices in demolition.
Casbon is survived by his wife, four daughters and three grandchildren. ERM has established a GoFundMe page in support of Casbon’s family.
