North American material recovery facility (MRF) operators faced a variety of challenges in 2020. With more people working from home in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, MRF operators and haulers noticed an increase in residential generation. Commercial volumes, on the other hand, declined as many restaurants, retailers and offices shut down temporarily in response to lockdowns. Additionally, some MRF operators have reported that contamination levels increased in 2020 and into this year.
In order to compile its largest MRFs list, Recycling Today ranked companies by tons shipped in 2020.
