A South Carolina man died while working on a Pickens County landfill expansion after being run over by heavy machinery, The Post and Courier reports.
Ronald Lewis McCarson, 49, was pronounced after being flown via helicopter to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital on March 25, according to the Pickens County coroner.
First responders were alerted to a possible crushing at the private landfill around 10 a.m. and treated McCarson on the scene before he was taken to Greenville.
His cause and manner of death are under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled, The Post and Courier reports. The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
The landfill, owned by MRR Pickens LLC, received a permit from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control in November 2008 to construct and operate a Class 2 Landfill, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
In March 2022, The Post and Courier reported that MRR requested an increase in the maximum annual disposal rate for its landfill which more than doubled its capacity.
