Enterprise Holdings, St. Louis, announced that its Tulsa (Oklahoma) Shared Services building, which provides administrative support for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent-A-Car brands, has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold designation from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
The 160,000-square-foot facility repurposes an anchor store in the former Tulsa Eastland Mall, which has been rebuilt as the Eastgate Metroplex office park.
Enterprise's Shared Services building has been outfitted with design features such as recycling 85 percent of the project construction materials to reduce impact on landfills and use of locally sourced construction materials to reduce transportation impacts.
Other highlights of the Tulsa Shared Services facility include:
- water-efficient landscaping designed to reduce water consumption and achieve a 35 percent overall reduction in water use, limiting impact on local aquifers
- thermal comfort features and controls that work to improve indoor air
quality, including advanced ventilation controls and HEPA filtration for the title vault and license plate storage rooms - a 54 percent reduction in electric power used for lighting, reducing the environmental impact of using energy supplied from coal-fired power plants
- large windows that provide ample natural light, reducing energy costs and providing the more than 730 Enterprise Holdings employees working on-site with open and inviting workspaces
- proximity to the city and easy access to public transportation
"With this particular project, we faced a number of challenges, including working within the existing infrastructure of the building and being connected to the main areas of the mall," says Willey. "But the entire team, including the property owner, our contractors and other suppliers did a remarkable job in working together to ensure that everyone was on board and understood what it was going to take to earn the LEED certification."
Since 2010, Enterprise Holdings has invested more than $150 million on thousands of new and retrofitted projects as part of the Enterprise Sustainable Construction Protocol (ESCP) program. ESCP outlines a standard set of design and management guidelines for all construction projects to help advance the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and smart business.
These and other initiatives are documented on the Enterprise Holdings corporate website as well as in its report, The Business of Sustainability. The report was prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 "Core" Guidelines, which help businesses like Enterprise benchmark and communicate their impacts on critical topics and key issues.
