The Carpet Recyclers, La Mirada, Calif., has reported that it has collected and recycled 100 million pounds of post-consumer carpet since starting up its carpet recycling facility in 2009. The company says it expects to recycle more than 60 million pounds of carpet in 2011.
Additionally, The Carpet Recyclers says that it has created 60 new jobs in California and expects to increase to 150 employees by the end of the year as it gets ready for the implementation of new California legislation addressing carpet recycling.Under Assembly Bill 2398, carpet firms are required to charge a 5-cent carpet stewardship assessment on every square yard of carpet sold in California.
The Carpet Recyclers says it has expanded its transportation services and is developing a statewide network of post-consumer carpet collection centers to meet the demand for carpet recycling.
"We have already seen a steep increase in awareness and interest in carpet recycling due to the good work of CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort) and CalRecycle (a California state agency that works to promote recycling in the state)," says Larry Fink, president of The Carpet Recyclers and its parent company GF Industries. "The carpet retailers calling us want to have their recycling programs in place in anticipation of their customers asking them about the 5-cents-per-square-yard carpet stewardship assessment on their invoices."
