
A bridge in Springfield, New York, was imploded on June 2, a report by WIVB says.
About 35 pounds of explosives were used on the 219 bridge over Cattaraugus Creek, which was composed of around 1,200 tons of steel. The bridge was demolished because it had become a safety hazard, and a new bridge will go up in its place, the report says.
The $17 million bridge construction project is expected to be finished by June 2017, according to the television report.
The three-second explosion halted traffic in a 1,000 foot radius, according to the report, and the creek was blocked off for boater safety. Before the explosion, crews removed concrete decking and left exposed trusses to create a controlled explosion.
