Demolition to make way for tallest buildings in Bethesda, Maryland.

Three 25-story buildings are planned for downtown site.

A building known as the Apex building in Bethesda, Maryland, is being demolished and replaced with three of the city’s tallest buildings in its downtown area, a report by WTOP says. Each building will be 25 stories or higher.

According to the report, the Montgomery County Council Committee on Planning, Housing and Economic Development voted to recommend the council approves $8 million to help real estate agency Carr Properties, Washington, buy out the building's leases. Currently, the Apex building houses the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists and Regal Cinemas.

The three buildings to be constructed on the site are two residential towers and an office building, the report says. The real estate agency is able to build at least 250 feet high.

Carr agreed to build the Purple Line station beneath the towers in exchange for the rights to construct them, according to the report. The redevelopment is two blocks south of the Bethesda Metro station, and the tunnel would connect the Purple Line and the station.
Demolition is expected to begin next spring.
