World Demolition Awards winners honored in Miami

Twelve awards were given to demolition contractors and equipment suppliers in various categories.

Winners of the 2016 World Demolition Awards were honored during a banquet Oct. 14 at the Marriott Biscayne Bay in Miami.

The event, which followed the World Demolition Summit, featured a shortlist from which winners were announced in each category. The winning companies and their entries are as follows.

Civil Demolition Award
Winner: Priestly Demolition, King, Ontario, for the demolition of the Nipigon River bridge on Lake Superior.

Industrial Demolition Award
Winner: McMahon Services Australia, Dry Creek, Australia for the demolition of bulk handling and other heavy equipment at the North Yard of Nelson Point iron ore facility in Western Australia.

Urban Demolition Award
Winner: Despe, Torre de' Roveri, Italy, for removing cinemas, theatres and shops at the Sporting d’Hiver development in Monte Carlo, France.

Explosive Demolition Award

Winner: Fábio Bruno Construções, Barra da Tijuca, Brazil, for the demolition and implosion of the seven-story Hospital Oliverio Kraemer in the middle of Rio de Janeiro.

Safety & Training Award

Winner: AR Demolition, Nuneaton, U.K.
The judges said: “All the shortlisted entries were strong, but the winners stood out. They showed a desire to review training regularly to ensure that all employees realize their full potential in a well-run team.”

Recycling & Environmental

Winner: Hughes and Salvidge, Portsmouth, U.K., for maximizing recycling and minimizing the environmental impact of a major decommissioning project for Versalis in the south of England.

Innovation Award – Plant & Equipment
Winner: Liebherr Group, Kirchdorf an der Iller, Germany, for the R 960 and R950 high-reach demolition excavators, which can carry tools weighing up to 3.5 metric tons.

Innovation Award – Tools & Attachments
Winner: Remoquip, Lawrencetown, Ireland, for its remote control interface module for the operation of excavators, loaders and bulldozers.

Contract of the Year Under $1 Million

Winner: Liberty Industrial, Glebe, Australia, libertyindustrial.com.au/
For removing a 229 foot bridge over the Duck River at the former Clyde Refinery near Sydney.

Contract of the Year Over $1 Million
Winner: Keltbray, Esher, U.K., for the demolition of the enormous Earl’s Court exhibition centers in London.

Collaboration Award
Winner: Kiewit/Manson, the California Department of Transportation, COWI, ESA and Ventura Consulting - for a major foundation removal on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge east span.

2016 World Demolition Award

Winner: Priestly Demolition - for its work on the demolition of the Nipigon River bridge on Lake Superior. The judges remarked, “Outstanding innovation - Priestley deserves this year’s ‘best of the best.’”
