‘Family Matters’ home faces demolition

The Chicago home used in the opening credits could not be renovated.

Chicago officials recently approved a demolition permit for a home shown on national television, a report by DNAInfo says. The house that served as the Winslow home in the 1990s sitcom Family Matters is set to be demolished.

“Family Matters” debuted in September 1989 on ABC and featured actor Jaleel White as the character Steve Urkel. The home on Wrightwood Avenue appeared in the show to establish scenes at the home and in the opening credits.

The city previously approved a permit to tear down the detached garage on the property in April. The current permit will allow a crew to “wreck and remove a two-story frame multiunit residence,” the report says.

The home’s current owners plan to build a three-unit residence on the lot, the report says. Coldwell Banker’s Lissa Weinstein, who spoke to DNAInfo on behalf of the owners, says in the report they originally intended to renovate the home but it wasn’t a viable option.
