C&D Recycling in Chicago has installed a VVZ-250 Hurricane Primary Waste Reducer from Vecoplan LLC.
The dual-shaft shredder has been up and running at C&D Recycling since October 2007 processing construction and demolition debris. According to Larry Hirsh, plant operations director at C&D Recycling, the Hurricane is processing an average of 350 to 400 tons of debris per day and is capable of processing up to 500 tons.
Vecoplan’s Hurricane shredders feature twin cutting rotors, each with a dedicated drive motor. While hydraulic motors are available, C&D Recycling chose a machine with Vecoplan’s patented HiTorc electro-magnetic pulse drive motors, according to Chris Hawn, director of business development in Vecoplan’s Waste Division.
Hirsch says his company opted for the HiTorc motors because of energy savings.
Other features on the Hurricane include: hydraulic aggregates with high torque pumps encased in sound enclosures; a center anvil with a replaceable hard-faced counter knife and removable screen grates for consistent particle output size; built-in tramp metal protection; and hydraulically operated double-wing drop-down doors for easy access to the cutting chamber.

Cat Announces Agreement with NavistarCaterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., and Navistar International Corp., have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pursue global on-highway truck business opportunities and cooperate on a variety of engine platforms.
The two companies intend to focus on global truck opportunities, including North American severe service construction trucks, as well as technology development for engines worldwide.
Through the alliance, Caterpillar plans to target a 2010 introduction of a North American Cat-branded, heavy-duty truck for severe service applications, such as road construction, large infrastructure projects and oil and petroleum development. Caterpillar has also determined independently that it will not supply EPA 2010 compliant engines to truck and other on-highway original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The companies intend to work together to develop, manufacture and distribute commercial trucks in select regions outside of North America. The product offering would include a full line of medium and heavy duty trucks in both conventional and cab over designs.
In addition to the U.S. and Canada, Navistar has a substantial distribution network in Mexico and Latin America. Caterpillar currently sells on-highway truck engines in Australia and New Zealand, Mexico and throughout Latin America, as well as in the U.K., Belgium, Russia, China and South America.
Under the alliance, Caterpillar and Navistar plan to cooperate on engine development, incorporating "best in class" technologies from both companies. They intend to work together on the development of mid-range engines for diesel applications, such as school buses and utility trucks.
The companies also intend to expand their existing remanufacturing relationship to include Navistar’s recently introduced MaxxForce on-highway engines. The companies expect to pursue additional remanufacturing opportunities as new vehicles and engines are developed.

C&D Recycler Purchases Red Rhino Crusher
Red Rhino customer, U-Crush-It is a family-owned business based in Alsop en le Dale in the Peak National Park.
It was set up as a farm diversification project following the rebuilding of the farm yard. A major part of the work involved taking up an old concrete farm yard to re-level and re-lay with block paving. "We were very keen to recycle the rubble into aggregate and started to look for a machine to do the job. At the time we couldn’t find a small enough machine to get on site," says Chris Duffell, owner of U-Crush-It.
Duffell says the rubble was taken away and fresh aggregate was purchased from a local quarry, which he believed was wasting a lot of money as well as resources. He then continued searching for a smaller compact crusher to use for future jobs. Finally he came across the Red Rhino 4000 series crusher, "It is impressive, a crusher small enough to fit through the stable door, but man enough to do the job."
U-Crush-It says it also hires the crusher to locals who may wish to save money by crushing onsite, which also encourages environmentally friendly business practice.
Metso Minerals Opens Research Center in Finland
Metso Minerals has opened a new research center in Tampere, Finland.
Activity at the new center will further strengthen Metso’s global knowledge base in crushing and screening technology. The center will also offer research and testing services for the global construction and mining markets.
Located in southern Finland, the new center includes a test facility with a fully-equipped rock laboratory for analyzing rock samples. Testing routines will enable Metso Minerals to design crushing and screening processes that are a match for customer needs in terms of process capacity, energy efficiency, end-product characteristics and yield. As well as enhancing Metso Minerals’ research and development activities, the new center will also shorten new-product development lead-times.
First announced in 2006 as part of a larger expansion plan, the Metso Minerals Research Center will eventually employ 20 people. The driver behind these investments is strong global demand for efficient and environmentally sound crushing and screening solutions and the overall level of activity in the construction and mining markets.
The new Research Center represents an investment of 3 million euros and is the largest single investment that Metso Minerals has made in research and development to date.
More information about the new facility, as well as Metso’s product line, is available at www.metsominerals.com.
