Ohio contractor demolishes former Rumpke site
Cincinnati-based Rumpke Waste & Recycling has demolished an old facility it operated in Columbus, Ohio, and plans to construct a new 200,000-square-foot material recovery facility (MRF) at that location.
Rumpke says it contracted with Columbus-based Elford Inc. to perform construction work on the site, while Marengo, Ohio-based Complete Clearing Inc. served as the demolition contractor on the job.
Prior to demolition, Rumpke says it used the Columbus location for container maintenance. It has since relocated those operations.
The company also used the space to hold a firefighting training event in October 2022. The “Save Our Own” event took place over seven days and hosted 250 firefighters.
Interior demolition work at the site began Nov. 8, 2022, and exterior shell demolition began two days later. Rumpke says demolition work was completed in early January.
“The site had a couple of existing structures that required demolition, and there will be a sizable amount of concrete that Rumpke hopes to reuse,” Rumpke says in a statement to Recycling Today Media Group about the demolition.
The company adds that the demolition involves the main building, a pre-engineered building and fence.
According to Elford, Complete Clearing is crushing the concrete foundations and slabs found at the site. The construction firm says it plans to reuse those materials in the new foundation system for the site’s MRF and office building.
With the demolition work completed, Amanda Pratt, director of Corporate Communications at Rumpke, says the company plans to host an official groundbreaking for its new MRF Feb. 23.
Rumpke says it expects to finish MRF construction by the summer 2024.
