The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James says the agency has procured $627,000 in funding for Brentwood, New York, to help pay for the cleanup of materials and contamination caused by illegally dumped construction and demolition (C&D) materials at Roberto Clemente Park there.
The funds, says James, will be collected from eight companies involved in the illegal dumping of at the park. The collection agreements “are the first resolutions reached in a federal lawsuit the Office of the Attorney General brought in 2017 against 33 construction contractors, waste brokers and waste haulers who allegedly illegally dumped materials in the park for years,” contends the attorney general.
The agreements seek to hold the companies liable for Brentwood’s lost use of the park during the three years it was closed for cleanup. The funds also will be used to improve public park facilities in the Brentwood community, including at Roberto Clemente Park.
The Town of Islip, which includes Brentwood within it, closed the park in May 2014 when environmental testing revealed the presence of asbestos and other harmful substances in areas of the park where illegal dumping occurred. The park remained closed until July 2017, as cleanup contractors removed approximately 39,000 tons of dumped soils and other materials.
The firms that have reached agreement with the attorney general’s office include six described as construction contractors and two described as waste brokers.
Legal actions against 25 additional companies and individuals remain ongoing, according to the office of Attorney General James.
