NAPA names new chairman

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has announced that James Winford Jr. was sworn in as 2020 chairman at the association’s 65th annual meeting Feb. 3. As chairman, Winford is responsible for guiding NAPA’s efforts to support the asphalt pavement industry.

Winford is president of Prairie Contractors Inc., Opelousas, Louisiana, which operates five asphalt plants across southwestern and central Louisiana. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from Tulane University and earned his doctorate in civil engineering from Auburn University.

“Ours is an industry that rises to the occasion for innovation and technological advances,” Winford says. “Asphalt pavements are an engineered product and no matter the need or the application, we can devise a solution.”

Winford will also work with NAPA’s professional staff in Washington to engage with Congress over the reauthorization of the nation’s federal surface transportation program and the need for a robust, stable funding stream for construction, maintenance and improvement of the nation’s infrastructure.

Winford has been an active member of NAPA, serving as the state director for Louisiana for three years and on various engineering and pavement-quality committees and task groups. He also served on the NCAT board of directors for 11 years, including four years as board chair, and he has sat on the NAPA Research & Education Foundation board of directors since 2009. Winford is a second-generation NAPA leader with his father, Jim Winford, having served on the NAPA board of governors in the 1960s.

CDRA announces 2020 C&D award winners

The Construction and Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) has announced a new inductee to its C&D Hall of Fame, as well as its C&D Recycler of the Year and CDRA Member of the Year for 2020.

The C&D Hall of Fame, which recognizes prominent leaders and pioneers in the construction and demolition recycling industry, inducted John Kurtz, president of the family-owned business Kurtz Brothers. The 71-year-old business based out of Independence, Ohio, has grown to become a major C&D recycler in Northeast Ohio, servicing dozens of different industrial sectors, homeowners, companies, communities and agencies.

Kurtz is a long-time member on the CDRA board and has represented the association to both the vinyl industry and the biomass market at industry events.

“[Kurtz] exemplifies the best in the C&D recycling industry,” says Terry Weaver, CDRA president. “His service and innovation in the industry, as well as his work for the association and the local community, make him deserving of this honor.”

For C&D Recycler of the Year, an award meant to honor recycling operators in the construction and demolition recycling industry who have made an extraordinary contribution, the CDRA chose DTG Recycling Services as the recipient.

The Renton, Washington-based multi-discipline recycling company has eight processing operations in its region that handle materials from concrete to plastics. The company’s recent accomplishments, such as acquiring and saving a failing MRF, launching a mattress recycling division, instituting a $16 per hour livable wage for employees and working with a local marine life conservancy program, helped DTG win the award.

Brandon Lapsys of Denver-based Komptech Americas has been chosen as CDRA Member of the Year. Lapsys, who serves as co-chair of the committee, has helped drive membership increases for the CDRA, while also providing guidance on the association’s marketing efforts.

The CDRA Best Practices in Safety Awards, which highlight members that establish specific goals for improving their compliance and safety performance, were also announced.
