Video: CDI implodes 90 wind turbines

The salvaged blades and drivetrain components will be used as replacement parts for similar turbines.

Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI), Phoenix, Maryland, recently felled 90 Mitsubishi 1000A wind turbines in New Mexico.

CDI acted as the explosives design and performance subcontractor to the main demolition contractor, Dallas Demolition of Dallas. Dallas Demolition was working for RiverCap Ventures, Rocky River, Ohio, who was serving as the general demolition contractor on the job.

According to CDI, no effort was made to preserve foundations or other wind farm infrastructure on the job. The company’s crew felled the 90 units in two mobilizations to the site. This allowed the wind farm owner to salvage blades and drivetrain components from some of the turbines, which will be used as replacement parts for similar turbines at its other wind farm locations.

CDI says that the turbines were safely felled and the job, which spanned from March to May, was completed ahead of schedule.
